Tolbiac
Description
Built in the 1960s, Télécom Paris building D is an archetype of its time, with load-bearing partitions, poorly insulated walls and a mosaic of facades. Its metamorphosis responds to the double challenge of ensuring its long-term survival by giving it new environmental characteristics and micro-densification, in an area where finding accommodation is already a challenge for students. To meet the first challenge, biodegradable materials are the order of the day, and wood is used for everything that deviates from the original envelope, while its lightness ensures that the original structure is not overloaded. Ceramic cladding, renowned for its durability, replaces glass paste on the façade. On the second point, a total redistribution has allowed the residence to go from 302 cramped rooms with no kitchen area to 344 larger units with kitchenette and shower room. The existing balconies have been integrated into the living space of the rooms in the form of alcoves, and space has been added in the underused corners and on the roof to accommodate larger units.
